“Where are the other nine?” | Memorial of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin

Keep me in your care, Lord. Give me the grace to give you thanks always for being at my side to give me courage as I move through every moment of the day. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, pray for us!

From the responsorial psalm: “He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side With your rod and your staff that give me courage. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Lk 17:11-19)

As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.

Lepers see Jesus as he travels through Samaria and Galilee. The ten lepers remain at a distance and call out loudly to him, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” In a few words, Jesus heals them, saying, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As the lepers go, they are miraculously healed of their leprosy as they obey Jesus’ command through their faith and action. But only one leper—a Samaritan, a foreigner—returns to thank Jesus, falling to his knees. Jesus says, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” Through his faith and gratitude, the leper receives complete healing in mind, body, and soul. As the day progresses, will there be time to stop and thank God for the work he accomplishes through us as we do his will.

God, let me consider the Gospel acclamation: “In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” I am sure that throughout the day I will experience what I believe are dark valleys, paths that appear to lead to no good end. Even in those circumstances, stir up in me the desire to take comfort in you, knowing you are present with your rod and your staff to guide and protect me. Keep me in your care, Lord. Give me the grace to give you thanks always for being at my side to give me courage as I move through every moment of the day. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, pray for us!

Thanksgiving Day | November 23, 2023

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Lk 17:11-19)

And one of [the lepers], realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus travels through Samaria and Galilee on the way to Jerusalem. The ten lepers he encounters cry out to him from a distance, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” Jesus tells them what to do to cleanse themselves. “Go show yourselves to the priests,” he says. But they are not healed immediately. Instead, as they go on their way they are cleansed, and only one returns to thank Jesus. Although the other nine lepers would have known almost immediately that the words of Jesus healed them, in ordinary experiences God works all things for good over greater spans of time. Consider the past weeks and months of this year. In what ways does a spirit of gratitude call to mind all of our blessings as individuals and as a nation?

God, you are present always amid everyday challenges, and you hear me when I cry out to you in prayer. Today, as you do every day, you give among all good things the gift of time and the encounter of your Son in the faces of others. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, help me be mindful of all you have done to make yourself known as the living God who walks with us day after day. And through the resurrection of your Son, who destroyed death and restored life, you invite us to the great feast in heaven, made present even now in the Eucharistic celebration. Free my heart from anything that would prevent me from falling at your feet in adoration and gratitude.

From the Gospel acclamation: “In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” Father in heaven, help me have a thankful heart for all of your gifts.

“Your faith has saved you.”| Wednesday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Lk 17:11-19)

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed.

In today’s Gospel, Luke relates the account of Jesus’ healing of the ten lepers. Although healed immediately, only one of the ten returns to Jesus to thank him and give glory to God. Luke tells us that he glorifies God in a loud voice and falls at the feet of Jesus in thanksgiving. As foreigners, and considered by Jews to be impure because of their religious practices and beliefs, Samaritans were looked on as inferior. In recognizing the miracle Jesus performed, the Samaritan gives witness to the importance of recognizing that God’s healing and unifying presence manifested in Jesus’ act of love and mercy.

Father in heaven, help me see with the eyes of faith beyond the physical limitations of sight. The leper Jesus healed came back to him glorifying you in a loud voice, an expression of his complete faith in you. Jesus said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” Give me the grace first to recognize your healing presence and also to be a witness to others in giving you thanks in your saving power.
